Our Lawyer — David Lai

Born and raised in Hong Kong, David moved to Vancouver at the age of 15, where he completed high school and earned his undergraduate degree. He later returned to Hong Kong and built a career spanning accounting, law, taxation, and academia before returning to Vancouver to establish his legal practice.

David began his professional career with Deloitte and KPMG, specializing in U.S. tax compliance and advisory services for multinational corporations and high-net-worth individuals. While at KPMG, he was seconded to the firm's Toronto office, where he gained practical experience in Canadian taxation.

As a lawyer, David has advised and represented clients on a broad range of tax, corporate, and litigation matters. His experience includes advising a listed company on the capital-versus-revenue classification of real estate activities; advising a multinational company on the tax implications of a corporate restructuring and proposed NASDAQ listing; and representing clients in stamp duty appeals, including negotiating settlements with the Hong Kong Department of Justice. His litigation experience also includes appearing as junior counsel alongside lead counsel in a 14-day defamation trial before the District Court of Hong Kong.

In addition to legal practice, David has been a university professor teaching company law and accounting, bringing his professional experience in law, taxation, and accounting into the classroom.

David has also contributed to the accounting and tax professions as a Course Director for the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs’ advanced taxation programs for CPAs. He was appointed by the Hong Kong Government to serve for six years on the Board of Review (Inland Revenue Ordinance), the statutory tribunal that hears appeals concerning Hong Kong tax assessments.

David is fluent in English and Cantonese and proficient in Mandarin.
